Single Review: ‘Malibu’ by Miley Cyrus

It’s a glorious time as Miley Cyrus as returned and she’s not twerking on Beetlejuice. Miley Cyrus is back to her to what I’m calling the rebirth because it’s a Miley we haven’t seen in years.

The first single off of her untitled sixth album is called “Malibu” and it’s an extremely well-done love song. Say what you will about everything before “Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz,” her music has always been well-produced. The aforementioned album is iffy on that. Anyway, “Malibu” is a pop-rock ballad that is extremely made for a summer ballad. The arrangement is floating and makes you feel like it’s a nice summer day with the wind blowing. The beat is warm. It sounds weird when you read it, but once you hear it, you’ll understand. It’s off-putting at first when you hear it but I really like it. It’s not over powering but it’s not too much. It’s infectious. The lyrics are so cleverly written that it should be illegal. They are catchy and just flow so well.

I mentioned above that it’s the rebirth of Miley Cyrus and I mean that because it’s like past Miley Cyrus and the twerking Miley Cyrus had a baby and this Miley is the baby. You see that in the video. The video is pretty basic as it’s just Miley walking around enjoying natural. You see some of “twerking Miley” in the video but not really. It’s more of some of the outfits she’s wearing. The video looks like a Miley who is more comfortable in her skin than ever before. She looks like she’s truly happy. While the video isn’t anything too exciting, it keeps your attention because of Miley and how she’s portraying herself. You are captivating with her presences onscreen. I’m not really sure how but you are.

Miley’s vocals are probably the best that I’ve ever heard from her. They are breathy vocals just fits perfectly with the arrangement. Even her background vocals just flow so well with the song. They are just so well produced and executed they stand out. They are full of love for the subject of the song, her fiance Liam Hemsworth. While I considered “When I look at You” to be her ode to him, this song is now that.

The song is a jam. It’s a summer love song and it just so good. It’s better than I thought it was going to be. Miley has always been good at reinventing herself and this is very good example of that. This Miley is very much happier and it really shows.
