Album Review: ‘Witness’ by Katy Perry

After years of waiting for this, Katy Perry has finally given us a brand new album. It’s been a helluva ride to get here. I’m just glad the wait is finally over.

“Witness” is the fifth studio album from Katy Perry. Right off the bat, you can tell that this album is definitely a different sound for her. “Witness” has more of a dance pop vibe to it. It honestly feels like europop. It’s not a bad sound for Katy Perry at all. It suits her vocals really well. Although, at times, it feels like too much. By the time you reach the middle of the album, you’re kind of tired out of the europop.

The fact that you are tired out of the europop is caused because it’s a rather long album. There are 15 songs on the album. If there was more ballads to break up the song with danceable beats, it probably wouldn’t feel like torture at some points. Think of it like you are going to a nightclub. You are enjoying the first couple hours of it but then you just over it. “Witness” is pretty much like going to club. It’s not bad in short sittings, but not good for long-term listening.

The lyrics are supposed to be more adult and socially conscious but they really aren’t. There are a few song with that but it’s not until the second half of the album. It’s the second half of the album where “Witness” shines and truly shows what could have been. Katy’s vocals on the album are the best on the second half of the album. On some of the songs, there’s just too much vocal effects to fit the genre that it takes alway from how good Katy Perry’s voice truly is.

The best song off of the album for me “Swish Swish.” This song is just so catchy and addictive to listen to. It’s definitely one of the highlights the album. Allegedly, it’s her answer to Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood, who magically added her discography to streaming services right before the release of “Witness.” Nicki Minaj really shines in the track as well. She has really been killing it when she’s featured on tracks. First “Side to Side” with Ariana Grande and now “Swish Swish.” Another good song is “Miss You More.” It’s probably one of the few true ballads of “Witness.”

”Witness” is actually a fun album. The majority of the songs aren’t anything spectacular. They are just fluffy dance pop filler. “Swish Swish,” “Chained To the Rhytm” are some of the highlights of the album. The sound is different from what we’ve heard from her and comes across as too much by the time you reach the end of the album. Like I said, It’s a fun album but it just gets old fast.
