Video Review: ‘Bad Liar’ by Selena Gomez

Okay, we need to have a serious conversation about the music video Selena Gomez dropped for “Bad Liar” and why it’s probably the best music video so far this year. Yes, you can probably already tell what rating I’m going to give it but still read because it will be worth it.

The “Bad Liar” video is pretty much like a film. Selena even released a movie poster for it. The video stars Selena Gomez as all the main characters. And it follows Selena in the 1970s as she watches father flirt with another teacher and cheat on her mother. There’s a ¬†twist at the end when it’s revealed that Selena is actually jealous of her father because she’s also in love with the teacher.

It’s a well produced video. There’s a 1970s style filter on it, everything about the music video feels like how they want it. The shots have a cinematic feel to them and it honestly feels like a movie. It pulls you in and makes you want to know what’s going on and more about the characters. While the video is only about three and a half minutes, you get invested into knowing about these characters and their lives.

While the song by itself was off-putting to some, due to the style of it. The video makes the song. It explains it more and just makes it more enjoyable. If you weren’t a big fan of the song when she released it, I totally recommend watching the video because that will make you love the song. The video just makes the song. It was a great song before the video but it’s an even better song with the video.

The one flaw with the video is that with Selena playing all the major characters, it confusing at first when it comes to the daughter and the mother. It’s Selena with just different hairstyles. If you don’t look at the characters, it get’s a little harder for a split second when it comes to following the story.

Selena’s video for “Bad Liar” is extremely well done and help carry the song and add more to it that might have not been previously there when it was just released.

Rating: 4 out of 5
