Mamma Mia, here we go again

The trailer for the sequel to “Mamma Mia!” came out last week. Thought it was the time that we dived back into the first movie for a review of the magic that was “Mamma Mia!” You could have probably turned this into a drinking game.

The movie “Mamma Mia!” follows Sophie Sheridan, played by Amanda Seyfried, as she invites three of her mother’s former summer flames as she wants to meet her father. But like every movie, everything goes wrong once Meryl Streep and her friends realize that they are on the island. The movie itself is a very fun movie to watch. It’s extremely enjoyable, especially if you are just looking for a rainy day movie.

The movie beautifully shot. Everything just looks so pretty and warm. You really want to go visit this island just because it is what one pictures when thinking of an island getaway.  I could watch the aerial shots of the island all day because they just look that good. Now let’s get into the “issues” I have with this movie.

This movie just feels like one big ABBA album. There really isn’t a lot of acting in between the musical numbers. It feels rushed because of this and you don’t really remember hardly any of side plots unless you’ve seen the movie multiple times. Also, they cast actors that aren’t really singers. I still can’t really put my finger on why they wouldn’t find actors that could actually sing. This is only really noticeable in the potential fathers. Amanda and Meryl slayed the songs they are in but the men don’t really hold their own.

Overall, “Mamma Mia!” isn’t a bad movie but doesn’t hold a candle to the Broadway musical. Meryl and Amanda have stellar performances while the rest leave you questioning the casting choices. The movie isn’t horrible and is just rough around the edges. It’s just those edges have sandpaper with shards of glass around them. the funny part is that it doesn’t need to be good to be an enjoyable time. It’s just one of those movies where it’s a guilty pleasure movie for all.
