Flashback: Miley Cyrus still ‘Can’t Be Tamed’

2010 was a weird era in the Disney Channel world. It was when the golden age began to slowly leave their mouse overlord for bigger and better things. Demi Lovato announced that she would be leaving “Sonny with a Chance” before rehab in 2011. Oh, She gifted us the iconic album “Here We Go Again” as well. The Jonas Brothers did “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam” with Demi before “being in between projects” and their first hiatus in 2011. Selena Gomez was last to leave the mouse as “Wizards of Waverly Place” was just getting started with its success.

Miley Cyrus, the 2010s Disney queen, finished production on the final season of “Hannah Montana.” Miley also donned bird wings and hopped in a birdcage to proclaim that she “couldn’t be tamed.” It’s time to unlock the birdcage and revisit the start of Miley’s maturing image and become the artist we know today.

I wanna be a part of something I don’t know

Miley from “Can’t Be Tamed” video

“Can’t Be Tamed” is Miley’s third studio album. It also was her final album released on Disney’s label Hollywood Records. Released on June 18, 2010, “Can’t Be Tamed” was produced by Rock Mafia and John Shanks. You’ve heard Rock Mafia’s music before as, like Jason Derulo, they feel the need to have the artist on their song spell out or say their name at the beginning of the song. Rock Mafia was exclusive to Disney Channel and their Hollywood Records label.

The album was a departure from Miley’s previous works, which were more pop-rock. It has more of a dance-pop vibe to it. This would be Miley’s start experimenting with her sound that would continue on with follows up albums. The album has a common theme: being free of expectations and being yourself. Not being tamed by anyone or anything. “Can’t Be Tamed” was the start of Miley’s more mature image, similar to what Britney Spears did with her third album “Britney.” Essentially, an artistry makeover into adulthood.

Singles

There are only two singles from this album. The titular track and “Who Owns My Heart.” While we know that “Can’t Be Tamed” is the stand-out from the album, “Who Owns My Heart” wasn’t the best second single that they could have used to promote the album. Now, I’m not a big fan of having the singles next to each other on the tracklist, especially when they are at the beginning of the album.

“Who Owns My Hearts” is a good song, but it doesn’t carry on the tone that the first single gives you. Personally, I would like liked “Robot” to have been the second single in hindsight. I would have probably help with the promotion. Also, it’s just a better song. Her vocals on it aren’t overly autotuned. It also carries the theme of not being controlled better.

The album

The album itself isn’t bad, but it’s not her best work when it comes to coherent sound. While it’s a dance-pop album, just a few songs just don’t fit in with the album. They aren’t necessarily bad songs, but they just feel out of place. I’m all for Miley singing ballads, and every album needs to have some of them. This album has about 4 of them, including a cover of “Every Rose has Its Thorns” by 80s rock band Poison. The cover isn’t the greatest thing in the world but breaks up the three dance-pop songs. After “Two More Lonely People,” it just turns into a mess when it comes to pacing.

If there was a better flow of the tracks, then it wouldn’t be so bad. It just felt like they gave up trying to tell a story with the album after “Two More Lonely People” and just threw the songs together. This would be the same with the production as well. There’s just way too much production on Miley and her vocals at points. Miley’s vocals don’t need to have autotune on them. You don’t need to have autotune to have dance-pop. “Permanent December” is the perfect example of this. It’s not a good song, and the autotune and the production on it just sounds like a poor attempt to recreate Kesha’s hit 2010 song “Tik Tok.” This album was really all over the place and not in a good way.

The Verdict

“Can’t Be Tamed” didn’t age well for me at all. I remember liking it when it first came out. I have fond memories of listening to it on my iPod in my room, but it just doesn’t hit the same 11 years later. The dance-pop songs are all classics and amazing to re-listen to. It’s the ballads and poor decisions for the placement of songs and productions that make me not want to re-listen the entire album again. Besides the first single, “Can’t Be Tamed,” I highly recommend checking “Two More Lonely People,” “Robot,” and “My Heart Beats for Love.” “Stay” and “My Heart Beats for Love” are the best ballads off this album. If there were only two ballads, then this album would have been way better.

While my feelings have changed for the album, this is still an iconic album and it really helped Miley find out who she is. Without this, we wouldn’t have gotten her next studio album “Bangerz” or even her latest release “Plastic Hearts.” I highly recommend checking out the album if you haven’t already, or if it’s been a while since you heard it. It’s totally worth it.

Chord Overstreet kicks off his new Overstreet project with a banger called ‘Wasted Time’

Chord Overstreet has given us the song of the summer

If you have lived under a rock in the last couple of years, then you have probably been keeping up with music that  Chord Overstreet has put out since the 2016 release of his debut single “Homeland.” Spoiler: they’ve all been bops. He’s now created a new project called “Overstreet” and released a brand new single as well.

“Wasted Time” is a pop-rock song that just screams summertime banger. The singer/actor, best known for his starring role in “Glee,” vocals on the song fit the overall vibe and perfectly. The whole entire song is extremely catchy and will get stuck in your head. The song has been only been out for a couple of hours and it’s stuck in my head.

I highly recommend that you take a listen to “Wasted Time” because it’s a summer banger. If the music video doesn’t feature him and a female companion being adorable, I will be disappointed and upset.

Oh, I certify that this song is a BOP, BOP, BOP, BOP TO THE TOP

#FeaturedFriday: Most Popular Girls in School

MPGiS-sm.jpg

If you ever wanted to know what “Mean Girls” would be like if Barbie and her friends starred in it, then “Most Popular Girls in School’ would be the answer to your prayers. And yes, this post will contain profanity.

“Most Popular Girls in School” is a stop-motion web comedy show that follows a squad of cheerleaders in Overland Park, Kansas and the life they live. It’s pretty much how one would assume Barbie and Ken would act like if they were alive. It’s pretty fucking great. There is swearing. The best part is the dolls are swearing and being bitchy. I’m pretty sure this show is a documentary on Barbie’s life.

Shit goes down in Kansas. Like there is blood feuds, pregnancies, mercenary cheerleaders, and elaborate schemes to take down their enemies. At one point, there was very well down shootout. Yeah, I didn’t know that cheerleaders do all that shit. They even take down hipsters and rip a little girl’s arms off.

The writing on the show is extremely well done. The comedy is well planned out and you can really tell how much thought went into writing and creating this show. “Most Popular Girls in Schoo” also provides with so many one-liners. The one-liners are so good that there are so many memes with them. Most of the show’s line has been made into memes, that’s how good the writing is.

The characters all stand out from each other. There’s not one character that you will forget about. Sure, there will be characters that will stand out more so than other like Brittnay Matthews. She’s pretty much the standout character of the series. She’s my spirit animal. Her bitchiness is so well done that you will love her for it. Here’s a taste of Brittnay. She’s reading a viral email:

Isn’t Brittnay lovely? If I had to give it a TV rating, it would TV-MA. But it’s well worth watching because it’s just so great. I recommend it so much, that here’s a supercut of all the insults, which you should memorize and learn by heart:

The fifth season will be starting this summer, and if you would like to enjoy this show, check them out on YouTube. This will literally be the best decision you will ever make.

#FeaturedFriday Artist: That Poppy

poppy-sm

Have you ever watched something on the internet and though what the actual f*** was that? You probably have because there’s a lot of weird shit out there. The internet gave us Justin Bieber and the Harlem Shake. Well, that’s pretty much summing up this artist. But we aren’t talking about just her YouTube videos, we are here to talk about the artist known as That Poppy, or simply just Poppy.

https://68.media.tumblr.com/d1ae43290feea6bfb0e308d9681c42dd/tumblr_obang59MB31ujgbu9o1_500.gif

That Poppy seems to be the love child of Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, and Lady Gaga. It seems like, in theory, that it wouldn’t work but it surprisingly does. It’s like she was crafted in some sort of laboratory in a test tube. Created as the brain child of Titanic Sinclair, Poppy’s YouTube videos are stuff that probably would make more sense if you were heavily drugged out. They are short, sweet, and to the point. There’s also some sort meaning to them, which you will start to realize that hidden meanings are something Poppy is good at. Some of Poppy’s videos include her interviewing a plant, eating cotton candy, laying on the ground, and talking to a mannequin named Charlotte. THere’s also two long videos of Poppy reading the bible.

While no one knows a lot about Poppy, like her age or real name, the pop artist came onto the music scene with her first single “Lowlife” in the summer of 2015. The song is catchy and the music video is extremely creepy as f***. There’s a devil in it and her singing to a bunch of old men in suits, which was symbolizing the media. Most of what poppy does seem to have some sort of hidden meaning to the video. Literally, there are so many videos about the conspiracy theories portrayed in her video. Everyone seems to think that she’s a cult and a part of the Illuminati. But its art and like all piece’s of art, everyone sees the meaning of it differently.

Poppy seems to be a making a comment on teen pop idols and the way artist/celebrities are portrayed in the media in general. She looks like a young Britney Spears for the majority of the videos. Her songs are catchy and follow the protocol for catchy pop hits. It’s all everything

Her music is extremely good and makes me think I’m under some sort of spell. But her videos are scary and creepy. It’s a deadly combination and it works so well. I highly recommend listening to her but be warned: THE MUSIC WILL GET STUCK IN YOUR HEAD AND NEVER LEAVE.

Here’s some more of Poppy’s music. Here’s also a link to her YouTube channel.
