Don’t worry about Facebook likes.


Facebook is the giant that took down MySpace a leader of the social media world. But with the recent additions to the game, it turns out that Facebook might not be that important if you are looking to extend your brand. Grab your coat because we are about to head over to the cleanest and safest corner on the street. Welcome to “Social Media Corner.”

So Facebook these days has been reduced to being only for friends and family, annoying game request, and re-posted videos that aren’t even yours, to begin with. If you are trying to reach the age group of 14-30, then don’t even worry about trying to get your page likes on that site. The majority of them are on Instagram, Snapchat, or Twitter. While Facebook is still a good way to have your content seen, it’s not something that I would overly stress myself over.

Facebook just doesn’t have the pull that it once did. If you look at the number of followers celebrities have on Twitter compared to Facebook, it’s actually a lot more. People just aren’t on Facebook, at least for following brands. Again, I’m not saying that you should just say “screw it” and totally write off Facebook. I would still make a page and use it so people have a content. But I wouldn’t be upset if your followers aren’t that high. People aren’t liking pages on there. They aren’t even really liking a post on there, even if it interest them. I know I don’t really like any pages on Facebook. I don’t see the point when I follow them on everything else. That’s why I don’t promote my Facebook page at the end of the post but rather briefly on the side. You are more than likely going to follow on Twitter than on Facebook. Pretty much, Facebook is just isn’t as good of platform anymore. Now I bet you’re wondering, “Steven, is there a way to still use Facebook in a productive way to help my brand?” To that, I give you a yes!

People are more than likely to share/see a video and start to build trust whether they agree with it or they just like what they content is. Why read something when you can watch videos. Think about it for a moment. How many times are you scrolling through your news feed and you see a video? It’s like every five posts. The perfect example of this is Tomi Lahren. Her videos got the majority of views on Facebook because people agreed with her views and they shared them. Then the cycle started and that’s how you build a brand on Facebook. Facebook has turned into more of a visual platform than a text one. Put out visual content that people find funny, interesting, or just agree with and it will help you build your brand on there.

Hopefully, this has helped. Just remember to not freak out if your Facebook likes go down or they aren’t that high. Unless its visual content like videos or photos, it may take a while to build up. Especially when people don’t like pages or post anymore. Just breathe and don’t stress.

Tell stories to your Facebook


Facebook has decided to rip off Snapchat with a new feature that they are currently testing called “Messenger Day.”


The social media empire is currently testing out this feature in Poland of all places. Pretty much, the new feature will be apart of their messenger app. You know the Facebook Messenger app, right? The one they pound down our throats every five minutes…yeah, that’s the app. “Messenger Day” takes the Snapchat Stories feature from the highly popular picture app and add its own Facebook twist.

Like Snapchat stories, “Messenger Day” will have a bunch of filters that will allow you tell people what you are feeling, what you are doing, etc. in these filters. It also appears that not a lot of the filters will be using your device’s GPS in order to provide area specific filters. It will also allow for sharing of pictures through it. Which makes it seem like it’s a hybrid of Instagram and Snapchat.

Either way, this sounds like this is going to be a make or break feature for Facebook, which has been dethroned as one of the most popular social media sites since more people have adopted Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram. But in all honesty, Facebook really needs to figure out it’s own ways in order to make itself stand out. This a great but it’s already been done. They really should be focusing less on the what has been done and trying to innovate it but rather making new and inventful things. I get why they would do that but it’s not making them stand out.

Copying the feature for Instagram worked better than expected because it allows the user to tell more of a story past the pictures they post on there page. Only time will tell if this feature will make Facebook the top of the social media empire again.

Teens-only social media is safe?

Have you ever wondered why no one has created a social network just for teens? A social network where no adults can realistically join? Well they have that now.

“Lifestage” is a teen-only version of Snapchat and Facebook mixed with Instagram. It’s an iPhone/iPad/iPod/iOS exclusive app that lets teens answer questions about themselves in short little videos. The videos then appear in the a feed for people to see. In order to join the upstart site, the user must be 21 and under to use the app. If you are above the age limit, you can join it but you won’t be able to chat/communicate with anyone. The app has features made into it that keeps parents, creepers, and others from stopping the user from using the app.

The kicker of the whole thing is that the app is made by a 19-year-old. That’s right, it’s made by a 19-year-old that works at Facebook. Did you design an app at the age of 19? I know I didn’t. The app overall sounds like something that is the right idea but is going about it in the wrong way. While it sounds like a good idea, i don’t see it ending well for Facebook. Like they have tried multiple times, Facebook has never been able to tackle the lead that Snapchat has over social media juggernaut. This app might be a step in the right direction, but the fact that it’s only for teens is what’s going to hurt it due to the issue that I’m not going to go over. Every Television show these days wants high ratings and social media engagement¬†is key to having a successful show. People talking about your show on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Tumblr, etc. Reality/competition shows are big on social media engagement. So much so that they have a hashtag for every segment/competition/part of the show. They will start with the show hashtags (ex. #TheFacesofGreed), then they will then have a new hashtag for any show competitions (ex. #LightsofHope, #TheFacesVote). On top of that, they will then give a more hashtags to use for each of the contestants (ex.#FOGLana, #FOGJEFF), or use an abbreviation for their name (ex. #FOG). We need to have an intervention because it’s becoming #toomuch.

I totally get why they do it but they are trying too hard. What’s the point of having multiple ones? Most people only would use the main one for the show. And is it really necessary to give each competitor a hashtag? They probably have a twitter account that the fans have already stalked and followed, just use those. It will create buzz for them and let them get more involved with the competitors and let them be emotional invested because they get to see a different side of them that won’t be shown on the show.

Having multiple hashtags is confusing and takes aways from the show’s content because they keep popping up on-screen every 5 minutes. Literally, they pop up on-screen and it’s not tiny but rather noticeable on the top or bottom on the screen. It just takes away from the show and the storyline you are portraying (yes, reality/competition shows still have a storyline whether we want to believe it or not.

I hope that shows will take a look on how they are doing their social media engagement because #toomuch hashtags is hurting their product.
